The Appalachian Trail AT runs from Georgia to Main, covering 2,178 miles along the way. As the name suggests, the AT follows the Appalachian mountains along the East coast. This weekend I got to hike a very small portion of the AT, beginning just below the Weverton cliffs. Then the last mile or so kicks your butt. You'll come to a sign where, I think at one time stated that the cliff are to the right, but now just stated the Appalachian trail goes north or south, so we continued North, DON'T do that if you're going to the cliffs, you hang a right there. In my view, there is no reason to do the C&O canal portion and make that part of your hike. I just take 340 east and take the Boonsboro exit. I then turn right on Weverton Cliffs road, and park in the commuter parking lot. From this point you are about 1.5 miles from the cliffs on the Appalachian trail.

The hike from Gathland State Park to Weverton Cliffs is a lovely walk in the woods, and is an ideal day hike that provides a taste of what through-hiking the Appalachian Trail is like. Plus, you're likely to encounter some AT through-hikers, and they're always interesting to chat with. The first section of trail ascends rapidly up Weverton Cliffs to an intersection; one fork leads to an overlook and the other continues along the Appalachian Trail toward Crampton Gap. I and a few others take the short spur trail to check out the views.

The day before I was on the Potomac River kayaking 5.5 miles to an amazing winery with a great group of girls. Weverton Cliff is located at the southern end of South Mountain in Maryland just off the Appalachian Trail. The trailhead is located at the end of Weverton Cliff road, a few yards from the parking lot- just a set of rock steps that disappear into the woods. I was wearing microspikes and glad of thembut the snowshoes would be a perfect choice for this soft, fluffy stuff.
